Death Cafe Comes to New York City's UWS

Death Cafe Will Now be Offered Monthly on the UWS of Manhattan. The Goal is to Establish a Supportive Resource Network and Open a Non-Profit Hospice House

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, August 28, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Death Café has become a global social movement, with Cafés being held all over the world; Founded by Jon Underwood of London in 2011 and based on the work of Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz, the Death Café model was designed to create a place where people can talk about this taboo subject in a safe, nonjudgmental environment while drinking coffee and eating delicious cake. To date, there are about 455 cafés around the world. The New York Times did a front-page story on the NYC Death Café in June 2013. Since then, Death Cafes have popped up in over 80 countries.
In the last 80 years or so our society has forgotten that death is a natural part of life’s journey. Death is the second leading fear in this country; fear is paralyzing. The result is that we do not talk honestly about death, and this makes for a much more difficult ending when the time comes. Simply coming together to talk about our feelings and philosophies regarding death takes the fear out of it.
People are pleasantly surprised at how upbeat and positive these Cafés can be. “I have seen so many wonderful connections come from these meetings—along with great moments of laughter,” said O’Brien.
Death is universal to all of us. To talk about the realization of death allows us to focus on life. As O’Brien likes to say, “Death Cafés breathe new life into living.”

Death Cafe UWS has been formed to bring community together, help build a resource network for those who are aging and at end of life, and to eventually fund a non-profit Hospice House on the UWS. Anyone interested in helping with the Hospice House, please contact doulagivers@gmail.com

This cafe is free of charge and no reservations are needed.
