33 children hospitalized after falling ill at summer camp
Thirty-two children and two adults from six counties, including Palm Beach County, were transported to two hospitals Thursday night after being sickened at a summer camp in Lake Placid.
Highlands County Fire Rescue and EMS responded to Camp Cloverleaf 4-H in Lake Placid around 8 p.m. Thursday, according to Marc Bashoor, the county’s public safety director. They were transported in ambulances to Florida Hospital in Lake Placid and Highlands Regional Hospital.
A total of 115 children were attending the overnight camp from nearby counties.
Bashoor said none of the cases were serious – mainly nausea and vomiting – but the situation became more urgent when one child passed out.
He said the camp staff is contacting parents and the other campers are fine.
Bashoor doesn’t know why the children were sickened and the health department will investigate.
Lake Placid is 108 miles south of Tampa.
