An Emmy Award-winning actress behind an acclaimed show from the 1970s has died. She was 90 years old.
Jean Marsh died of complications of dementia at her London home on Sunday, April 13, the New York Times reported.
Marsh was best known for co-creating and starring in the ITV series “Upstairs Downstairs,” which ran from 1971 to 1975. The renowned British drama series picked up 16 Emmy nominations and seven wins, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Marsh’s performance as Rose Buck in 1975.
Marsh also co-created the hit series “The House of Eliott,” which ran on BBC from 1991 to 1994. Marsh had further starring roles in the 1982 sitcom “Nine to Five” and in films such as “Return to Oz” (1985) and “Willow” (1988).
The actress also famously took on three roles on the long-running British sci-fi “Doctor Who.” Marsh appeared as Princess Joanna in “The Crusade,” Sara Kingdom in “The Daleks’ Master Plan” and as a villain opposite the Seventh Doctor. She was briefly married to actor Jon Pertwee, who played the Third Doctor in the series, from 1955 to 1960.
Marsh’s other notable film and television credits include “Cleopatra,” “Return To Oz,” “The Heavy,“ ”Hawaii Five-O,“ “Sense And Sensibility” and “Grantchester.”
